8. Waiting until Midnight

When Tripti's birthday arrived, she smiled for everyone around her, but her heart waited for just one notification.

Isha.

From the moment she woke up, she kept checking her phone, convincing herself the message would come. Every vibration made her hope. Every hour that passed made that hope a little quieter. By midnight, the screen was still empty, and so was the place in her heart that had been waiting.

That night, Tripti cried - not because she hadn't received one more birthday wish, but because she finally understood that some chapters don't reopen just because we keep waiting. For the first time, she stopped expecting Isha to come back. It wasn't anger. It wasn't hatred. It was the quiet acceptance that sometimes, holding on hurts more than letting go.

As days passed, Tripti poured the emotions she could no longer express into her books. Studying became more than preparation for exams—it became a way to keep moving forward. When the results came, she hadn't topped the class, but she had scored far better than she expected. For someone who had spent months fighting battles no one could see, those marks felt less like numbers and more like proof that she was healing.

When everyone congratulated her, they saw only the result. They didn't see the sleepless nights, the tears hidden between textbook pages, or the courage it had taken to keep trying. Aalankrit smiled quietly when he heard her marks. He knew those numbers weren't just academic success—they were proof that, despite everything she had lost, Tripti had found the strength to keep choosing herself every single day.

That birthday became a turning point in Tripti's life. She no longer waited for messages that never came or searched for familiar faces in crowded hallways. The memories remained, but they no longer controlled every part of her day. She still missed Isha, and perhaps she always would. But for the first time, she allowed herself to believe that life could still hold new beginnings alongside old memories.

As the year moved forward, Tripti realized something she had never imagined before. The emptiness left by one person had not disappeared, but it had slowly been filled with courage, hope, and the quiet presence of someone who never left. She didn't know what the future held. She only knew that, for the first time in a long while, she wasn't afraid to face it.

Little did Tripti know that life wasn't done surprising her. The chapter she thought had ended was only preparing her for another. Some people leave to teach us about loss, while others arrive to remind us that kindness still exists. And somewhere between those two lessons, Tripti was slowly becoming the person she had always been meant to be.

She didn't know whether she and Isha would ever speak again. She stopped trying to predict the future and started living one day at a time. Every evening after coaching, every solved question, every genuine laugh with Aalankrit became a small reminder that life doesn't always heal us by giving back what we lost. Sometimes, it heals us by sending someone who quietly helps us keep moving forward.
