Chapter 19: More Than A Punishment

When the final chit had been answered, no one spoke.

Mrs. Sharma looked around the room, her eyes resting on each student.

"When I first sent you here," she began, "I thought I was punishing seven students."

She smiled softly.

"I was wrong."

The seven of them exchanged confused glances.

"I've watched all of you for months. The way you listen to one another. The way you celebrate each other's victories and quietly carry each other's burdens."

She paused.

"That doesn't happen because of detention."

"It happens because you chose kindness."

Ayaan leaned back in his chair.

"So... are you saying we've graduated from being criminals?"

The room burst into laughter.

Even Mrs. Sharma couldn't hide her smile.

"You've graduated into something much better."

She looked toward the old blackboard.

"One day you'll leave this school."

"Years from now, you probably won't remember every formula you memorized or every assignment you submitted."

"But I hope you remember this room."

"The place where seven strangers stopped pretending they were okay."

No one realized it then...

but those words would stay with each of them long after they left Room 17 behind.
