Chapter 14: The Things We Carry

The following Saturday, no one waited for Mrs. Sharma to begin.

It was Ayesha who broke the silence.

She unfolded her chit.

"What is one thing people always get wrong about you?"

She smiled faintly.

"They think I'm rude."

She looked around the room.

"They think I argue because I enjoy creating trouble."

She shook her head.

"I argue because I've spent my whole life watching people stay quiet when something unfair happens."

Her voice softened.

"My father always told me that if something feels wrong, speak upβ€”even if you're the only one standing."

She looked down at the chit.

"So when I see someone being treated unfairly, I can't pretend I didn't notice."

Ayaan chuckled.

"So... you're basically the lawyer of Room 17."

Ayesha laughed for the first time.

"Maybe."

Mrs. Sharma smiled quietly.

Sometimes, the people labeled as "rebels" weren't trying to break the rules.

They were simply trying to make them fair.
