The first hour in Detention Room 17 felt endless.
The ticking clock echoed louder than anyone's thoughts. Reyansh revised formulas from memory, Akruti quietly filled another page of her sketchbook, Vihaan bounced his leg impatiently, Aashi looked around the unfamiliar room, Ayesha stared out of the window, Yash kept his eyes fixed on the floor, and Ayaan simply couldn't stay quiet.
"So," he sighed dramatically, "does anyone here actually know why the universe has punished us like this?"
No one answered.
Ayaan placed a hand over his heart.
"Wow. Seven people, and I've managed to find the only room where silence is everyone's favorite hobby."
Vihaan let out a quiet laugh before quickly hiding it.
"I knew it!" Ayaan pointed at him. "The athlete laughs. Progress!"
Reyansh finally looked up from his notebook.
"If you're done entertaining yourself, some of us are trying to study."
Ayaan leaned forward.
"And some of us are trying to survive four hours without dying of boredom."
A small smile appeared on Aashi's face.
"You smiled!" Ayaan exclaimed. "Finally! That's two people."
"I didn't smile," Aashi replied, trying not to laugh.
"You literally just did."
"I didn't."
"You did."
For a moment, the room felt lighter.
Even Akruti looked up from her sketchbook.
Then, a sudden gust of wind blew through the half-open window. Loose papers scattered across the floor.
Without thinking, everyone stood to help.
As Reyansh bent to pick up a page, he noticed one of the papers wasn't homework.
It was a pencil sketch.
A beautiful drawing of the old corridor leading to Room 17.
Every tiny crack in the wall, every window, every shadow had been captured perfectly.
He looked at Akruti.
"You drew this?"
She hesitated before nodding.
"It's... incredible," he said honestly.
For the first time that afternoon, Akruti smiled.
Only for a second.
But everyone noticed.
No one said it aloud, yet something had changed.
They had entered Room 17 as seven strangers.
For the first time, it no longer felt impossible that one day they might leave as something more.
